Snow White/Happy:There's this academic article that I read last year that kind of totally changed my life. It talks about the ableism present in Snow White, and how really the only strength she has is her beauty, and how she's basically what society would have/had us believe is the ideal woman: she's beautiful, she's white-skinned, she stays in the kitchen and is motherly and kind, etc. And the essay goes on to point out the heterosexism and ableism that Snow White and the Prince represent. They're each other's only conceivable love interest, as the Prince especially could experience desire for only Snow White, and not any of the other men present (and there's no other women around for Snow apart from her stepmother the Queen), and how the dwarfs, who are not old men in every adaptation, could never be a love interest to anyone because, as dwarfs, they deviate from the 'norm' of physical beauty. Indeed, Snow White highlights this by treating them all as children, making the very idea of her desiring them as absurd. I'm not going to recreate this essay here, but basically, it bothered me, because it was really kind of true. And it's why I'm making such a point of having ships in this movie whereas otherwise I would have been happy to ignore it, and why I making a point of shipping the dwarfs and why I'm making a point of seeing if I think Snow White could work, emotionally speaking if nothing else, with the dwarfs. Because age certainly wouldn't have been a problem in their society. Thus, the first of these is Snow/Happy, because he is such a gentleman with her, and truly interacts with her the most, apart from Doc, Grumpy, and Dopey.
Grumpy/Snow White:Because he's the only one who is anything approaching her equal amongst the dwarfs. He's the only one that isn't her total doormat (though unfortunately he isn't allowed to completely escape that fate), and he's got something of a similar yin/yang thing going on with her that he does with Doc. Also, his grief when she was thought to be dead genuinely touched me the most out of the dwarfs. Basically, theirs is just the most believable relationship of all the ones she has with the dwarfs.

Other than that, while there's a lot of femslash potential in this movie (i.e. Janis, Cady, Regina, Gretchen, and Karen with...any of each other), and then there's the other canon pairings (Aaron/Cady, Janis/Kevin, Gretchen/Jason, and Regina/Aaron), none of those really, truly interest me and hold my attention. Mostly this is because Mean Girls, for the most part, isn't really a movie that's about shipping or romance or anything like that for me. I think it's a brilliant satire/parody on the high school experience, and for girls in particular, and its ruminations as such are what intrigue me in this movie. Plus, it's one of the most quotable movies ever, and the quotations can practically be tailored to fit anything. So yeah, only one true pairing here for me. :)

Evil Queen/Prince (aka Queen Grimhilde/Prince Ferdinand) :
And yes, I tell you no lie. Those are their names. Anyway, I'm putting these two together because I detest the Prince for his uber-creepiness, and hope he falls into a pit of sadness, and so I would thoroughly not mind the idea of him being miserable with the Queen for the rest of his life. And since I'm ambivalent towards the Queen, I don't mind either way that I can see this relationship going, which is that either somehow against all odds they fall in love and change each other for the better, or she stays evil and gets pleasure out of torturing him (and Snow White by proxy of getting her Prince Charming) for the rest of eternity. It's all good with me. Plus, back in those times, it is totally realistic that they could have gotten married. Especially if the Queen had succeeded in her plot to kill Snow White, because then her kingdom would have been left without an heir. In any case, if I actually cared at all about these characters, or even decided to just experiment some day, I think a fascinating fic could be written trying to make this relationship happen.Doc/Grumpy:
While I'm not going to force characters together where I cannot see them working out, I will nonetheless be trying to keep my eyes open for het and slash pairings and aim for equality. Anyway, when I watched the movie again a while ago, I kind of saw Doc and Grumpy as being the leaders of the dwarfs, and they kind of have this yin/yang thing going on of balancing each other out, with Grumpy being almost overly cynical and pessimistic to Doc's more lax and positive outlook. In essence, they're a Mom/Dad pairing, with Doc being the Mommy of the dwarfs to Grumpy's Dad. The scene where Snow White sends them out to go wash for dinner illustrates this quite well. Grumpy's all gruff and manly and proud of his dirt and ain't gonna let a woman push him around, while Doc gathers the others up and patiently instructs them on how to wash, and then directs the others to gang up on Grumpy to get him into the tub. Come on, those were total Mom/Dad vibes going on there, with the other dwarfs practically being their children. I think they're kind of adorable. Plus, I love Mom/Dad ships more than most things.Snow White/Happy:
Snow White/Doc:
Hmm. He's the only one who seems to have any true idea of what she is or how to interact with her at all. He basically acts as the spokesman for the dwarfs at times, but he still takes an interest in her and asks her questions, and seems to be the one to look after her well-being the most.Grumpy/Snow White:

Regina/Shane:
Honestly, I think Shane deserves an award for being The World's Most Understanding Boyfriend. I mean, seriously think about it. Regina dumped Aaron so that she could start going out with Shane, right, but then she starts going back out with Aaron again to hurt Cady. While she's still going out with Shane. So Shane, who's her real boyfriend, agrees to basically not be seen with her in public anymore, and become the boyfriend on the side. I mean, seriously? If that was me, that shit wouldn't have gone down well. But not for Shane, No, he puts up with Regina's sort of psychosis. Later, he's the only one who sticks beside her, when even her friends have abandoned her, and even when she's fractured her spine and such. I mean, Jesus, this dude is seriously dedicated, for all that he comes off for the most part as a typical brainless high school jock. And considering that she never tries to get rid of him either, I would think that Regina cares for him a great deal as well. At any rate, their relationship seems to be the most honest one that Regina has with anyone thoroughout the movie, and the one with the least amount of manipulation on Regina's part, putting aside the whole Aaron thing.Other than that, while there's a lot of femslash potential in this movie (i.e. Janis, Cady, Regina, Gretchen, and Karen with...any of each other), and then there's the other canon pairings (Aaron/Cady, Janis/Kevin, Gretchen/Jason, and Regina/Aaron), none of those really, truly interest me and hold my attention. Tod/Copper (platonic/bromance) :
I've decided that I need to follow the lead of some of my friends, and stop completely shunting aside platonic relationships, because I really make it seem like I'm completely obsessed with romance, when...I'm really not, in my real life. I'm just interested in relationships period, and most people just respond more to the romance. But anyway, on with the new focus on platonic love/bromance! And well, how could I not start this off with Tod/Copper? Their movie is really a platonic, forbidden love story, and while they don't get to be together at the end, the relationship these two characters have with each other is really just breath-takingly beautiful, in my opinion. Because the way its played out is something that you really just don't see that often. They're not together at the end, and will probably never see each other again, and go on to perform the functions and roles that society expects of them, and that isn't a bad thing. Sure, it's sad, but...moving on is a part of life. You make new friends, lose old friends, maybe find those friends again, lose those once new friends....you just keep moving on and forward. It's like that one quote says....Don't be sad that it's over. Smile because it happened. They may never be together again, but Tod and Copper will always have the memory of that friendship in their hearts, and that will always have a special place for them.

Erik/Charles:
If you glance back up into the Harry Potter section, notice how one of my favorite pairings is Grindelwald/Dumbledore? In fact, you could even go so far as to say that Grindeldore is my second favorite HP pairing after Remus/Sirius. So, if one takes Grindeldore and translates it over into the X-Men universe, do you know what you end up with? You get, my dears, my OTP of X-Men, Erik/Charles. Seriously, if Albus was in X-Men, he would be Charles with a beard, and Gellert would totally be Erik. I love couples like this more than most things, in case you haven’t been able to tell. But Erik/Charles is so much like Grindeldore, because in both cases, they were BEST friends and had the potential to be more than that once, until ultimate tragedy intervened, in Erik’s case, by a) killing Shaw and while Charles was in his mind and holding him in place, forcing Charles to experience the man’s death, b) sending the missiles back at the humans, forcing Charles to realize that their differences in opinion re: said humans was too great, and c) accidentally deflecting a bullet into Charles’s spine and causing him to be paralyzed. And yet, despite all of that, it’s painfully obvious that they both still love each other (this still holds true, even if you consider them to be just friends), even when they’re both old men. Seriously, that scene when they’re playing chess in Erik’s cell is adorable, and I could totally see Albus and Gellert doing something similar. And if you go back to X-Men First Class, you see even further that they exhibit all of the hallmarks I look for in couples. Erik and Charles are equals—they’re the most powerful (offensive) mutants on their team, and they (apart from Raven) have the most experience with their mutations, and therefore they both challenge each other. They both come from extremely different walks of life, and they make each other shift pre-conceived notions and help each other grow (how heartbreaking is it that Charles is pretty much the first and kind of only friend that Erik has ever had?! And Charles, for his part, has had a fairly sheltered life; he hasn’t had to deal with pain and trauma like Erik has). And last but not least, they’re also compliments: Erik is the level-headed, practical one, and has a ruthless streak a mile wide; Charles, by contrast, is the idealist, the one who can see and believe in the best of people. Charles tempers Erik’s more violent tendencies, and Erik grounds Charles from letting his head get too far into the clouds. Charles is the light to Erik’s darkness, if you will. And they already share a deep and intense emotional and intimate bond in First Class; I don’t think love is that great of a step from that.
Erik/Raven (Magneto/Mystique) :
And let me start with a disclaimer. When I walked into the theater to see X-Men First Class after being (gently) forced by my friends into going, I literally knew nothing about X-Men. The only thing I knew was that Hugh Jackman played some guy named Wolverine. And that’s it. So, in my first viewing of the movie, I just kind of sat there, staring wide-eyed at the story being played out on the screen, and the only definite opinion I had about anything went something along the lines of, “OMG, Erik is one of the most amazing things ever *hearts*". Ahem. So, my brain was busy that first time around trying not to overload with absorbing this brand new world. And thus, when Erik and Raven’s kiss scene came up, I did a bit of a double-take, and wondered where on earth that had come from. But I didn’t dwell on that and I moved on, because I figured it was something that would have made sense to me if I wasn’t such a complete noob and obviously missing something. The time then came for my second viewing of the movie. And this time, I was able to register something I hadn’t the first time around: that Erik/Raven did not, in fact, come out of complete nowhere. And this is the part that I described in my Luxord/Xion explanation: Erik is the one who, though unobtrusively, provides relentless encouragement for Raven, who tells her that she’s perfect just the way she is, and that she has to learn how to accept herself before she can expect anyone else to. And now having seen the movie series as a whole, the purpose of First Class for Raven is showing how she became the bold, fearless, and confident Mystique, and how Erik is intrinsic to that transformation. And seriously, I love Erik so fucking hard for giving Raven exactly what she needed in that kiss scene. (Also, I know he was having some issues of his own, but seriously, fuck Hank in that scene, man.) I may be an Erik/Charles shipper, but that was truly perfection. Also, I love them being bad ass and awesome in X1 and X2. (And now I know why some people prefer to believe that X3 doesn’t exist. I’m one of them.) In conclusion, what I really loved in First Class for Raven was her character arc, and I loved the role that Erik played in it.
Azazel/Mystique:
This couple is apparently just one of many ‘canon’ interpretations of Nightcrawler’s origins, with the aforementioned two being his parents. And you can see the resemblance, what with him having the blueness of Raven and the tail and teleportation of Azazel. Anyway, on to actually discussing the couple at hand, I really adore Azazel and his ultimate badassery, and I can see how, now being forced to work together in the Brotherhood, how he and Raven would curious about each other. I also imagine that if Raven was going to try to get along with anyone in the Brotherhood, how Azazel would probably be the most friendly and receptive. And I can see them working in a relationship together because, like Erik, Azazel wouldn’t treat her like a kid sister, and neither would he have a problem with her natural appearance, especially as he himself has no room to talk. Raven may even feel a bit of kinship with him on that front, because the two of them are the most obvious mutants (Hank had to be enhanced to get to that level; he wasn’t that way naturally). But unlike Erik, Azazel isn’t a walking ball of unleaded trauma, and I think Raven would appreciate a break from dealing with Erik’s numerous Issues, especially as I don’t think Erik would share his problems with her like he ended up doing with Charles. And as for Azazel, I think Raven would be able to share with him perspectives that he’s never had the chance to experience for himself, as unlike Raven, I don’t think he’s ever been able to blend in with society at all. I can see her fascinating him, and just…yeah. Even if I couldn’t have thought up all of the above as a reason to ship them, the Rule of Cool would still apply here for me.
S T A N D B Y M EChris/Gordie:
Any way that I can get them. Just...the entire time that I was watching this movie, all I could think was: "I ship you two so hard." They're just so, so, so freaking sweet, ohhhhhhhh my gosh, they absolutely slayed me with the cute. Chris is the only one that's emotionally supportive towards Gordie, especially since his brother died, and in turn, Gordie's really the only one to believe in Chris and that he can rise above his drunken father's bad reputation. They cuddle each other, they cry on each other's shoulders, their chief concern is always for the other...God, they are just so friggin' cute. Cuuuuuuuuute beyond belief. Jesus, they completely blindsided me. *huggles them into eternity*

Lilo/Stitch (platonic) :
Well, no duh. I mean, I think it's impossible for someone to like this movie and not end up liking these two as well. They're just so cute. What I really like, is the sort of weird...equality that their relationship gets? Like, sure, Stitch is physically stronger and smarter and such than Lilo, but Lilo's the more emotionally intelligent of the two, and she expands Stitch's world-view while he helps her heal from her parents' death and her other troubles. By the end, they both end up taking care of each other, and they're best friends and Platonic Life Partners and all that jazz, and it's really quite adorable.
Jumbaa/Pleakley (bromance) :
Lord help me, their Odd Couple routine that they've got going on absolutely slays me with its hilarity. The way Pleakley reins Jumbaa in from his evil-ish tendencies and from being a dumbass, the way Jumbaa needles him back and pushes him into...living outside the box, shall we say. And honestly, I think that Jumbaa and Pleakley never really had any friends before they met each other, and this is the first meaningful relationship the two have ever really had outside of family, and that they're each the first people who could really come to understand each other. Plus, by the end of the movies and TV series, they really get a big kick out of portraying a married couple, you know? Which, in my opinion, is totally cool. Rock your genderqueer/tranny self, Pleakley. XD
Nani/Stitch (platonic) :
The little hints and glimpses of their relationship that we get to see in the original movie, at least (because I haven't seen the other two movies or the TV show in forever, so I don't really remember this kind of thing), completely intrigued me. They've just got this sort of relationship that I can see developing into this sort of Vitriolic Buddy relationship. Like, they can gang together to sort of mother hen Lilo, or roll their eyes at each other when David and Lilo are off doing whatever, or Nani can grudgingly accept Stitch's help on college homework or something. So, I guess a slightly antagonistic brother/sister-ish relationship? I don't know. But I just loved seeing their interactions.
Experiment 625/Gantu (bromance) :
This is basically the thing that I remember the clearest from the TV series: 625 and Gantu basically became the standard villains, and in the process of being stranded on Hawaii and trying to capture the other Experiments or whatever, and in living in such close quarters, they basically developed an Odd Couple relationship to rival Jumbaa/Pleakley. From what I remember, they're kind of like Jafar and Iago from Aladdin, except 625 is waaaaay more laidback than Iago, and while Gantu's being his obsessive/ranting and raving self, 625 is there to tell him to sit down, take a chill pill, and to eat a sandwich. 625, I guess, it sort of like a housewife that packs Gantu's lunch when he goes out to the face-off of the week. It's hilarious and adorable, and seeing the two play off of each other makes Gantu way more likable and just flat out amusing, instead of annoying. Plus, it doesn't hurt that 625 is, like, my very favorite of Jumbaa's experiments. (Oh, and I know this should technically go under my TV Shows post, but meh, whatever. :P)
Grand Councilwoman/Cobra Bubbles (platonic) :
Is it so bad that I want them to be inter-galactic pen pals? XD But seriously, they're both awesome and reasonable authority figures, and I love them both, and they increase each other's cool points, or something.
Nani/Lilo (sisterly) :
The relationship they have with each other often rings painfully true, and I love how they can go from screaming at each other and practically tearing out hair, and then coming back together and being there to hold each other up and support each other, in their own ways. I love how neither of them are perfect, and that they both recognize that, and that maybe they love each other all the more for not being perfect. Nani may not be the perfect parent/guardian ever, but Lilo doesn't want her to be, and they're both in pain and hurting, but come to heal, and it's just awesome.
Experiment 627/Experiment 625/Gantu (bromance) :
Because it's crack, and it makes me happy to even imagine the shenanigans and how this would work out. Plus, 625 as the Only Sane Man in his crew amuses more deeply than it has a right to. The introduction of Experiment 627 (which, honestly, I can barely remember) greatly intrigued me...and I guess, he's sort of like my Lilo&Stitch version of Kingdom Hearts' Vanitas---a literally insane dark creature that I want to come to know the Power of Love and Friendship, but still keep traces of that insanity for my own kicks and amusement. I just think this combination would make the funniest roommates, like, ever. 627 would be all insane and destructive, Gantu would be all emo and Plotting Evil-ish Deeds, and 625 would be calmly kicking back and making his sandwiches and weirdly mother them, which would thoroughly annoy the other two, but it'd be oddly endearing or something. Annnnd it's clear that my brain is really, really, really cracky. I wonder if I'll ever cease surprising myself. XP

Date: 2013-01-29 03:33 am (UTC)Though, lol, if you ever happen to read Janette Rallison's My
FairyFair Godmother someday, I thought she had an interesting take on it. (Ftr, Rallison specializes in fluffy modern romantic comedies that I enjoy because I see a surprising amount of depth in them, yet I could totally understand why anyone might write them off as useless drivel. BUT, Godmother was a surprising deviation for her in that she actually ventured into the fantasy genre, and from what I can tell, it's her most popular book.)It's true that age wouldn't have been a problem in their society.... *cries* Granted, Snow White is kind of presented as more of an adult than she actually is (despite the infantile mentality o.O), but, gah. Middle Eastern culture as far as it relates to this issue, and all similar ones such as ancient Roman and medieval European or whatever this movie is, is SO SCREWED UP. X(
I can see those dwarf/Snow ships working as long as they give her a chance to mature into an actual adult, rather than taking advantage of her and trying to force her to grow up too early and traumatizing her in the process; and like you said, they at least work on an emotional level. It's a good, outside-the-box thing to think about.
Mean Girls - I could have SWORN I'd commented on this before!!! *so confused*
Fox & Hound -
"I've decided that I need to follow the lead of some of my friends, and stop completely shunting aside platonic relationships, because I really make it seem like I'm completely obsessed with romance, when...I'm really not, in my real life. I'm just interested in relationships period, and most people just respond more to the romance. But anyway, on with the new focus on platonic love/bromance!"
O.O NOW I KNOW I HAVEN'T READ THIS BEFORE. KIRYN YOU MAKE ME SO HAPPY WITH THIS. 8D 8D 8D *HUUUUGS*
...But still confused, because I think I read the second part before. XD
By the way, um..."compliments" are nice things you say to people, "complements" are two things that go together well and enhance each other.... ^^;
Jumbaa/Pleakley bromance is hilarious and sweet, I love them. XD Seriously, it seemed like the only person poor Pleakley ever had contact with outside of business was his mom. ^^;;
YES, oh my gosh, Nani & Lilo are the most realistic sisters I can ever remember seeing in fiction ._.
